Great things going on at Center High School
I would like to start this week by thanking all the outstanding members of the middle/high Building Leadership Team (BLT). This group of professionals needs to take great pride in the behind the scenes work they do. Kindra Rounds, Katrina Ruggles, Daniel Newmyer, Julie Weatherford, Becky Reed, Linda Donaldson, Alice Burch and Carrie Zimmerman are a great bunch of professionals that keep the big picture in mind. That big picture is what is best for our students! The BLT is real similar to being on the BOE, as sometimes it can be a “thankless job”. But, like our Center School Board of Education, this group tackles many tasks monthly. The best part is when we have something that might be controversial, we all communicate and try to do what is best! This BLT had a chance to present this model in Breckenridge last summer. We had over 50 professionals attend this session to see what we are doing. I periodically get an e-mail from some random folks who have questions about what they should be doing. That was an honor in itself. The BLT has had many great teachers and professionals that have fulfilled their term. I can honestly say that we have not missed a beat. Thanks to all the BLT members and my hope is to have many more meetings to make our school a better place for our students to learn. This group has all of our CORE VALUES in mind when making many decisions and throughout meetings!
After having TCAP testing, spring break, and being at multiple meetings it was nice to get back into classes again this last week. I would like to talk about a lesson I witnessed in Scott Poole’s classroom. I walked into the class and all the students were listening to Mr. Poole’s lesson with intent. He was doing a power point presentation. ALL the students were taking notes. The students were on task and engaged because of the many strategies Mr. Poole used. I witnessed Mr. Poole using partner response, quick response, and table talk. The best part of the lesson was when Mr. Poole would ask intriguing questions on content that he wanted them to learn. I know that many students were paying attention, because they knew Mr. Poole was going to call on them. For the first time all year, I stopped class and asked all of his students if what Mr. Poole was doing was benefitting them? It was interesting to have the students talk about how they knew that the questions were coming and they must try and restate that content back to Mr. Poole. The students knew that would be held accountable for their own learning. If the students did not know all the answers, Mr. Poole would use someone else to help them and come back to the first individual, for the final answer. Mr. Poole incorporates our core value's in his classroom. He believes ALL students can achieve at high levels.
This past week-
was full of meetings. We had multiple RTI meetings for a student and his mis-behavior outside the school day. I had the opportunity to interview one of our students in preparation for a Daniels’s scholarship. I attended two meetings in Alamosa for athletics and concussions. We had our monthly BLT meeting off campus for the first time since we had many items to cover. And I was able to get into many classrooms to finish up the week.
The week ahead-
Monday I will be having my final Focal Point evaluation. I will be in classes to observe some teaching. Some Monte Vista administrators will take part in the evaluation.
Tuesday and Wednesday- my hope is to see a bunch of teachers in action by conducting walk-throughs. We are hosting a Freshman/Sophomore track meet in the afternoon on Tuesday. I will be working that event.
Thursday-I hope to process some payroll, and get into classes. My hope is to see everyone teaching twice this weekJ.
Friday-all administrators will be traveling to Salida to take part in the SB-191 Principal evaluation all day.
