Our purpose is to increase academic achievement for ALL students
Center School of Excellence Award
Congratulations to Center High School for their 5th consecutive Center School of Excellence Award that was presented to Mr. Welsh and Mr. Lobato this past week. Each year, the Colorado Department of Education recognizes public schools in the state that enroll a student population of which at least 75 percent are at-risk pupils and that demonstrate the highest rates of student longitudinal growth, as measured by the Colorado Growth Model. On the school performance framework that is used by the state to evaluate schools, Center High school has demonstrated impressive results on the indicator relating to longitudinal academic growth. For the 8th consecutive year Center High School has attained this growth. This award is attributed to our outstanding teachers/Para’s, staff and students at Center High School. Great job!

NWEA TESTING
This past Tuesday and Wednesday we were able to conduct our mid-year NWEA testing. The NWEA test is a progress monitoring tool that allows us to see where our students are in each one of the three core subjects. The students take an individual test in language, reading, math and science. They take the test on their computer or iPad and the results are immediate. We conduct most of our planning and instruction based off the results of these tests. I have looked at many of the scores and it seems like we have a large number of students that have gained adequate growth over a half of year of instruction at Center High School. I will have more results next week. I would really like to think Cheri Garcia, Carol Phillips, Rosa Ramos and Becky Reed for all their work in preparing for our NWEA testing. This test is a key component of increasing academic achievement for ALL students.

ALL VALLEY FOOTBALL BANQUET
Congratulations to the following student athletes from Center High School on receiving their awards at the All Valley Banquet last Wednesday evening in Alamosa. The All Valley awards are nominations of the best football players in the San Luis Valley. It is a really neat and distinguished banquet that is conducted annually. The players are selected by a committee of members that watch film, tape and games. They evaluate and choose the best football players in the San Luis Valley. José Angel Chavez and Luis Mariscal were both voted first team members. Nabor Quintana and Jeremiah Moreno were voted to the second team All Valley. All four of these players put in extra time in the off-season, weight room, and they worked hard all season long. All four guys were key members to our successful football season.

This past week- Monday- preparing for NWEA testing took up the majority of my day. I had a couple of meetings scheduled that I attended and I was able to get into some classrooms for the rest of the day.
Tuesday-We had our first round of NWEA tests. The students were in their ICAP grade level groups. The students tested from 8:00 until 12:00. In the afternoon the students went back to their respective classes. I did two walk throughs.
Wednesday- Was day 2 of NWEA testing as I travel up to Center to see how the testing was going. We had our annual AD meeting in Alamosa at 10:00. I was back on campus to see some instruction in the afternoon. Due to the weather I did not travel to Denver for my CHSAA meeting.
Thursday- I was able to look at some of the NWEA data, and help with make-ups. I traveled to SDC to watch our ladies and men compete in the first round of the tournament. I traveled back to Center to conduct more walk throughs.
Friday-I was on campus as much as possible to conduct walk throughs. As I was back and forth between games for the Sangre tournament.
Saturday- I was able to watch our Center Viking men team capture the 3rd place trophy as they defeated Del Norte.
The week ahead-
Monday-I hope to spend the majority of the day looking at lesson plans/conducting walk throughs. I have a lunch meeting planned with a private scholarship donor. I will be working on scheduling some RTI meetings with counselors in the afternoon. The Health Advisory meeting is scheduled for after school and I will cover C team games vs. Del Norte starting at 6:00.
Tuesday- I will be in classes and I see we have interviews for the Mason’s scholarship. I have a math department meeting in the afternoon. That evening we have our annual DAC/BOE meeting starting at 5:30.
Wednesday-The ACT Plan is scheduled for the morning. I have a couple meetings regarding CAN classes and RTI. I plan on being in classrooms again. I will attend the winter concert.
Thursday-I will be in classrooms. Thursday we will be rewarding all students who demonstrated growth and attained their goal for NWEA during 6th and 7th period. I will have that list out on Monday.
Friday-I have an all valley admin PLC.
Saturday-We will host the Viking Athletic Association basketball tournament all day long. Tournament starts at 8:00 and will conclude about 9:00.
Have a great week!
