This week, I would like to give some perspective on what it takes to be a student athlete. It is evident that many of our student athletes are having great success on the floor and mat as well as in the classroom. It takes a special kind of person to be able to juggle homework, tests, bus trips, late practice and games. Recently Colorado High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) commissioner Paul Angelico sent me an article regarding success in athletics and how that relates to success in academic achievement. The one part of this article that sticks out in my mind is. “It is a common refrain among advocates for education reform that athletics have assumed an unhealthy priority in our high schools.” But these advocates rarely offer data to support their view. Instead, they rely on stereotypes about dumb jocks, anecdotes, and painful personal memories as their proof”
Our data suggest that this claim that high school athletic success comes at the expense of academic success is mistaken. Of course, we cannot make causal claims based on our analyses about the relationship between sports and achievement. It’s possible that schools that are more effective at winning in sports and expanding participation are also the kinds of schools that can produce academic success. But the evidence we have gathered at least suggests that any trade-offs between sports and achievement would have to be subtle and small, if they exist at all. Descriptively, it is clear that high schools that devote more energy to sports also produce higher test scores and higher graduation rates.

It was a great weekend to be a Center Viking as our wrestlers defeated #5 ranked Del Norte on Friday night and all of our four (JV and Varsity) basketball teams were victorious on Saturday. As always our cheerleaders do an outstanding job garnering school spirit and preparing for our winter pep assemblies.
This past week-
Monday I reviewed lesson plans and attended an RTI meeting. Tuesday I shared data with students, sat in on custodian interviews, and conducted a BLT meeting in the afternoon. Wednesday I was able to get to some e-mails before attending the monthly SPL and middle school athletic director meetings in Alamosa. The evening ended with parent/teacher conferences. Thursday I conducted many walk throughs and treated out auto mechanic students to pizza. The evening was concluded with parent/teacher conferences. Friday was spent being administrator in charge at the middle school girls’ basketball tournament in Alamosa. I also attended the duel in Del Norte. Saturday I covered the middle school girls’ basketball tournament in Alamosa and also hosted Antonito at home for basketball.
The week ahead-
Monday will be spent reviewing lesson plans, Carrie and I will meet to complete our PLC agenda and compiling an eligibility checklist for CHSAA. Tuesday I will be conducting walk throughs in the building. There will be our monthly DAC and school board meeting in the evening. We will also be hosting Monte Vista for four basketball games. Wednesday morning I will attend the ICAP review in Ruggles room, there will be ICAP for high school and middle school students. Carrie and I will be preparing our tentative room schedule for TCAP testing. There will be an afternoon PLC on Wednesday as well. Thursday is pretty open for e-mails and walk throughs. Friday I will be heading to Fowler for the regional seeding meeting for wrestling. Saturday I will be in Fowler for our regional wrestling tournament.
Enjoy your week everyone!
