High school Language Arts teacher Mrs. Rounds and her report on 9th and 10th grade writing-
Our goal at Center High School is to improve our student’s ability to write proficiently and monitor that growth. Several years ago we implemented the District Writing Assessment which is administered to all high school students grades ninth through twelfth. In the 2013-2014 school year I am proud to report that the data shows our students’ scores are on an upward trend and making gains.
The district writing assessment is given three times a year; beginning of the year (BOY), middle of the year (MOY) and at the end of the year (EOY). The essays are graded on organization, support, style, and conventions using a four point rubric. The data reveals that both the 9th and 10th grade students improved in all four areas from the beginning of the year to the middle of the year assessment. In these four areas where a 4.0 is the highest score, the 9th grade improved from an average score of 2.0 to 2.6 and the 10th grade went from an average score of 2.2 to 2.5
The greatest improvement in our students writing can be seen when we evaluate the overall total scores located on the right side of the data chart. We use a four-point rubric to grade the essays which means a score of 16 is perfect. Scores in the 0 – 6 range are unsatisfactory, 6.1 – 10 partially proficient, 10.1 – 14 proficient, and 14.1 – 16 advanced. I am proud to report that the ninth grade class as a whole moved into the proficient range; the 9th grade overall total score went from 7.98 at the BOY to 10.23 at the MOY. That is a gain of 2.25 points pushing the 9th grade class average into the desired proficient range. The 10th grade class average also improved 1.10 points going from an 8.88 at the BOY to a 9.98 at the MOY; that is only lacking 2/100’s of a point from reaching the proficient mark.
The district writing assessment is an example of how Center High School is keeping our students accountable and ensuring they are prepared for the challenges of the 21st century. We use this assessment to monitor and determine the needs of our students and then based on that data, use focused classroom instruction to ensure students can write. We are committed to helping all students be successful. The end of the year (EOY) district writing assessment will be administered in the high school May 5th and 6th.

This past week-
Monday- I looked at lesson plans and caught up on paperwork, e-mail and conducted a couple of walk throughs. I had multiple meetings on students.
Tuesday-I was back in classrooms. I helped celebrate Mr. Welsh and Mrs. Cooper's birthdays. I helped run the freshman/ sophomore track meet and then I watched our varsity baseball team compete against Centauri.
Wednesday-I was back in a couple of classes for observation and lesson plan review. Mrs. Zimmeman and I met on a couple of items regarding NWEA. I attended the bullying meeting after school.
Thursday-We had an early morning staff meeting. I observed two more teachers, and conducted regular principal business. I was able to witness our Lady Viking victory over Pagosa in the last minute.
Friday-no school
Saturday-I covered our baseball games in Sargent
The week ahead-
Monday-No school as I will be going to Bayfield to cover soccer at 4:00.
Tuesday-lesson plan check/walk throughs and RTI meetings on students. I have a bunch of meetings during the day. I am meeting with Deb from PEBC in Alamosa, and I meet with Mr. Green in Alamosa at 1:00. We have a double header baseball game at ASU at 2:00.
Wednesday-I will be a sponsor for the 9 news/weather science day Rockies game. This is a merit trip for students with great behavior, no tardies, few absenses, ZAP's ect.
Thursday-I hope to be back in classes. I will start looking at potential candidates for upcoming jobs in our schools.
Friday-I am planning on being in classes the majority of the day.
Have a great week!
