What is a PLC?
On Monday, Center secondary principals will be hosting a variety of leaders throughout the San Luis Valley. Building Principals will be on campus to learn about some processes and procedures that will help them improve their own schools. Mrs. Zimmerman and I have decided to teach many of the other Principal’s our Building Leadership Team (BLT) and our Professional Learning Communities (PLC) process. Then we are going to explain how we are using data to improve instruction. Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) shift the focus of school reform from restructuring to a culture of working together for a common goal. A PLC is an ongoing process used to establish a school wide culture that develops teachers leadership focused on building and sustaining school improvement efforts. Our PLC’s follow all of our core beliefs. If our purpose is to increase academic achievement for ALL students, then we must look at some of the procedures that will continue to help us work towards this common goal. Through participation in PLC’s, teachers enhance their leadership capacity while they work together a common goal. In the past few months, we continue to use the PLC process to grow as teachers, principals, counselors and paraprofessionals. Our PLC groups are professional people sharing and critically interrogating their practice in an ongoing, reflective, collaborative, inclusive learning-oriented and growth-promoting way.

Hawaiian Night
On Friday evening we hosted our first annual Hawaiian Night. The night was created by Skoglund middle school history teacher and basketball coach Jan Vigil. Mr. Vigil brought the idea from his coaching days at Adams State University. Jan wanted to build school spirit and create a unique environment circle around Hawaiian attire. All students, staff members and fans were encouraged to wear their Hawaiian garb while they cheered on the Viking basketball teams to victory. With the help of Brandon Selby and our high school student council we had great games during intermission. The student council created a variety of games for entertainment. Miss Susan Banning ordered all the prizes and helped create a festive atmosphere. Kim Duran and the high school cheerleaders did a great job of decorating the gym and helping with the games. Thanks to all of the students and staff that showed school spirit by dressing up and attending the games on Friday night. Center High School is planning on doing this event every year.

This past week-
Monday- I worked from home as I reviewed lesson plan and answered many e-mails.
Tuesday-I was able to get into a few classes and I met on making the PLC principal agenda for Monday.
Wednesday- I attended our monthly AD meeting in Alamosa. I was able to get into a few classes in the afternoon. That evening I worked on Valley Classic payroll and the upcoming regional tournaments.
Thursday-I was able to be a part of many instructional walks in the middle/high schools. This was very valuable, as the teachers helped us with a variety of feedback.
Friday-we hosted the All Valley PLC in Center where we focused on the teachers effectiveness rubric on calculation of data. We hosted our first annual Hawaiian night.
The week ahead-
Monday- we will host the principal PLC all morning. We have walk throughs scheduled mid-morning. The afternoon will be devoted to looking at lesson plans.
Tuesday- I have more walk throughs planned. I have one meeting in the afternoon scheduled. I will attend the monthly DAC and BOE meeting this evening.
Wednesday-I have a couple of meetings, and I will be working on good conduct awards. I plan on observing classes. Our bell schedule will be shortened for parent teacher conferences. PT conferences will start at 3:30 and they go until 7:30.
Thursday- More teacher walk throughs, along with lesson plan checks. We have a student climate survey planned. We have day two of our parent teacher’s conferences from 3:30-7:30.
Friday-We have the day off, as I will be attending the Regional wrestling meeting/tournament in Del Norte. I hope to be able to attend some of the basketball games vs. Del Norte at home.
Saturday-Final day of Regional wrestling in Del Norte.
Have a great week!
