Great things going on at Center High School
Good evening-
Center High School has proven itself internationally this past week. Morgan Hart (senior) and Alexa Lobato (junior) represented Center High School this past week at the International Sustainable World Engineering Energy and Environment Project (ISWEEEP). It was a great accomplishment for these two students to be chosen and attend the competition, but they went beyond just attending, they both brought home bronze medals for their projects. This is an international competition with students from all around the world. What a great accomplishment for these two students and their sponsors Daniel Newmyer and Diego Martinez. Thanks for all your hard work and dedication to science and congratulations on your accomplishments!!! Let’s not forget what an accomplishment it was for Ingrid Hernandez to qualify for ISWEEEP as a freshman. She will be a threat for next year.
NWEA testing was completed successfully last week. This is a major project that entails a great deal of planning. All staff was dedicated to completing the assessments successfully. A special thanks goes to Becky Reed for her efforts and organization of these assessments. I would also like to thank Julio Paez for his flexibility and willingness to make the needed changes to allow the testing to take place in a timely manner. As if Marsha and Deb didn’t have enough on their plate, I have asked them to help me calculate growth on NWEA tests for all the students. Thank you ladies so much for all that you do. I know you put in many extra hours and stress into this task.
With all the excitement of the new building and the upcoming year, Mr. Welsh felt like the class of 2012 was getting a little shortchanged. Mr. Welsh, being the guy he is, allowed the senior class to leave their mark on the new building in their own way. Every senior left their handprints in the cement in the back of the new building. After all they have contributed to the building of the new school and suffered some sacrifices along the way.
Teacher appreciate week is this upcoming week. I would like to take the time to let the staff at Center High School know how much I appreciate your hard work and dedication to our students. The staff is always willing to go the extra mile and put in what is necessary to help our students succeed. No gift I could ever give you would be enough to show my appreciation for all of you and your efforts, but lunch will provided on Monday. The best part about your lunch is that you will have an entire hour to consume it and each other’s company. Mrs. Zimmerman and I will take the entire student body during this time.
Congratulations are in order for Coach Lloyd Garcia, LJ Garcia, Fred Garcia and the Center Viking Baseball team. Their win on Friday morning put them into the “Sweet Sixteen” state tournament for baseball. Good job Vikings!!! We are looking forward to some good baseball on Saturday, as they take on the #1 team in the state (Rye) at 10:00 am at Runyon Field in Pueblo. I also want to thank Kate Newmyer for taking the entire band to march in the “Blossom Festival” in Canon City.
This past week:
Monday was spent in Denver finishing up the last session of the CADA conference. Tuesday was filled with many meetings. These meeting included college plans, special education, technology, wrestling hall of fame, and course identification numbers. I was able to get to a few classrooms on Tuesday was well. Wednesday was a day to honor those students who earned a trip to Denver to visit Coors Field. The morning was filled with weather and science provided by Steve Spangler and 9 News. The afternoon was right up my alley. We got to watch a heck of a baseball game (Rockies versus Dodgers). Thursday was spent with Mrs. Zimmerman and Mrs. Cooper. We looked over walk through data for the entire year to help us with teacher evaluations. Friday morning I managed to get into five classrooms before heading to Alamosa for the district baseball tournament.
The upcoming week:
Monday will begin with a 7:00 am meeting with head coaches to vote on athletes of the year. The rest of the day will be spent looking over lesson plans and conducting more walk throughs. High school academic awards will take place Tuesday morning starting at 8:00 am. A progress meeting is planned for an expelled student. The day ends with high school academic/athletic awards, district accountability, and school board meeting. Wednesday will be our monthly valley athletic directors meeting. I also hope to attend my own son’s RTI meeting (the positive type) in Alamosa. National Honor’s Society will be holding their annual induction on Wednesday evening as well. Thursday should be regular day with walk throughs and a few end of the year business meetings. Friday we host the SPL championship track meet. Saturday will be a trip to Pueblo for the first round of the state championship baseball tournament and onto Colorado Springs for the National Wrestling Hall of Fame banquet. Our own Diego Pons will be receiving a special merit award.
